Hardwood Flooring for Living Rooms: Warm, Classic, and Built to Last
Hardwood flooring is a favourite for living rooms because of its timeless style and natural warmth. You can choose solid or engineered hardwood in many stains, plank widths, and finishes to match almost any design.
- Advantages: Hardwood can last for many years and add value to your home. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished to look fresh again. Engineered hardwood has a layered build that holds up well to changes in humidity, so you can enjoy real wood with extra peace of mind.
- Design Tip: Lay a large area rug over your hardwood to add softness and warmth while still showing off the beauty of the wood.
- Best For: Families who love a classic look and want a floor with lasting quality.

Luxury Vinyl Living Room Flooring That Keeps Up With Real Life
For a floor that looks great and handles daily messes, luxury vinyl flooring is an excellent choice for busy homes. That includes luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT). It’s designed to look like wood or stone while standing up to kids, pets, and everyday spills.
- Advantages: Luxury vinyl comes in water-resistant and waterproof options. Many styles use a rigid core, like SPC vinyl (stone plastic composite), which feels solid underfoot. Look for a thicker wear layer, the clear top coat that protects against scratches and scuffs, if your living room sees a lot of foot traffic.
- Design Tip: Choose a warm wood-look vinyl to create a welcoming space for game nights, lazy Sundays, and everything in between.
- Best For: Families with kids and pets who want style and durability in one floor.
Most luxury vinyl installs with a simple click-lock system that snaps planks together, while some styles are glue-down for a firm, quiet feel. Learn more in our luxury vinyl FAQ.

- Advantages: Laminate is easy to care for and stands up to active homes. Many newer laminate styles also offer water-resistant protection for everyday spills.
- Design Tip: Dark wood tones bring a rich, cozy feel, while lighter shades help your living room feel open and airy.
- Best For: Families who want a durable, low-maintenance floor with a natural wood look.

- Advantages: Tile stands up to spills, stains, and heavy foot traffic. It comes in many colours, sizes, and textures, including wood-look tile that gives you the warmth of wood with the strength of tile.
- Design Tip: Large, matte tiles in soft neutral tones create a calm and timeless look. Want more personality? Try a patterned tile to make a statement.
- Best For: Homes in hot climates, high-traffic living spaces, and families who love a low-maintenance floor.

Living Room Flooring Tips for Your Lifestyle
If your living room sees a lot of foot traffic, these options are built to keep up without showing much wear:
Durability isn’t the only thing to consider. Here are a few more ways to find a floor that fits your everyday life:
- Quiet, cozy spaces: Soft carpet adds warmth and helps reduce noise, so it’s perfect for reading, napping, or movie marathons. A quality underlayment under laminate or vinyl can also soften sound and add comfort underfoot.
- Open-plan living: If your living room flows into your kitchen or dining area, using the same floor throughout helps your home feel bigger and more connected. Many designers follow the “rule of three,” which means using no more than three flooring types across your main living areas.
- Underfloor heating: Tile, luxury vinyl, and engineered hardwood are often good matches for warm floors on chilly mornings. Every product is a little different, so check the details or ask our team before you choose.
- Easy cleaning: Hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl make sweeping and mopping quick and simple, so you spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying your space.
